Rubens dipinse studi di teste dopo modelli dal vivo e fonti artistiche, creando un cast di personaggi che servivano a loro volta come modelli per figure in opere religiose e mitologiche. La figura principale di questo studio è servita variamente come un santo, un sommo sacerdote, un dio fluviale e il filosofo Platone. L'altra testa, derivata da una di Mantegna, ebbe la sua vita artistica. I discepoli di Rubens Jacob Jordaens e soprattutto Anthony van Dyck seguirono la stessa pratica.
