Peter Wtewael era figlio e allievo del suo padre molto più famoso, Joachim Wtewael. La sua oeuvre sicura è costituita da circa 5 dipinti firmati e datati. Il nostro Laughing uomo con flauto è il primo lavoro conosciuto dalla sua mano. Il tema dei musicisti che suonavano gli strumenti era un soggetto molto popolare con i caravaggisti Utrecht, proprio intorno alla data di questo dipinto, 1623. Allo stesso tempo questo lavoro mostra chiare influenze manieriste (coloranti, grandi mani) e così può essere inteso come una sintesi tra manismo e caravaggismo.
