Dieses intime Bild des Kopfes Christi, das für die private Hingabe bestimmt ist, stammt aus einem verlorenen Bild des Heiligen Gesichts von Jan van Eyck, das jetzt nur durch Kopien bekannt ist. Nach der eyckischen Komposition behandelte Petrus Christus den Kopf wie ein Porträt, indem er ihn mit einem fiktiven Rahmen umgibt und damit die physische Unmittelbarkeit Christi unterstrich. Seine Darstellung unterscheidet sich von dem Prototypen, aber bei der Präsentation von Christus mit gefurchte Stirn, die Krone der Dornen, und Bluttropfen rennen seine Stirn und auf seine Brust.
