Questa immagine intima della testa di Cristo, intesa per la devozione privata, deriva da un’immagine perduta del Volto Santo di Jan van Eyck, ora conosciuta solo attraverso le copie. Dopo la composizione eyckiana, Petrus Christus trattava la testa come un ritratto circondandola di una cornice fittizia, sottolineando così l'immediatezza fisica di Cristo. La sua raffigurazione differisce dal prototipo, tuttavia, presentando Cristo con la fronte solcata, la corona di spine, e gocce di sangue che scorre lungo la fronte e sul petto.
