Esta imagen íntima de la cabeza de Cristo, destinada a la devoción privada, deriva de una imagen perdida de la Santa Cara por Jan van Eyck, ahora conocida sólo a través de copias. Siguiendo la composición Eyckiana, Petrus Christus trató la cabeza como un retrato al rodearla con un marco ficticio, subrayando así la inmediatez física de Cristo. Su representación difiere del prototipo, sin embargo, al presentar a Cristo con ceja surcada, la corona de espinas, y gotas de sangre corriendo por su frente y sobre su pecho.
