Manet besuchte den Canal Grande Venedig im September 1875 mit seinem Freund und Mitmaler von außerhalb des Impressionistenkreises James Tissot, der sich nach dem französisch-preußischen Krieg von 1870-71 in London niedergelassen hatte. Obwohl die bewässerte Pracht von Venedig viele große Künstler inspiriert hat, Manet fand es schwer, sich zu begleichen, aber trotzdem gelang es ihm, eines seiner schier impressionistischen Kunstwerke zu malen.
