Questo dipinto, simile a un gioiello, fu uno dei diversi artisti eseguiti da artisti di spicco per la cappella privata della Regina Anna d'Austria (1601–1666), la vedova moglie di Luigi XIII e madre di Luigi XIV. Membro fondatore dell'accademia, Champaigne ha stabilito un modello chiave per il classicismo francese con una tavolozza ricca ma leggermente ghiacciata e forme scultoree. Negli anni 1640, Champaigne favorì gravi composizioni che divennero associate a Jansenism, un filo di Controriforma del cattolicesimo. Partendo dalle paure che i Janseniti portavano simpatie per la dottrina protestante, Luigi XIV soppresse le loro pratiche.
