Dieses ehrgeizige Werk ist eines der ersten Kompositionen des Künstlers im großen Maßstab. Der Vordergrund ist etwas awklig arrangiert, aber die beleuchtete Ebene in der Ferne scheint Konincks reifen Stil der Panoramalandschaft Malerei bekannt zu geben. Frühere holländische Landschafts- und Meeresmaler hatten sich mit Blicken auf Erde und Himmel beschäftigt, aber Koninck (der Rembrandt gut kannte) führt dramatische Kontraste von Licht und Schatten und ein Gefühl der Natur als ständig wechselnde Kraft ein.
