Nel 1891 Gerard Philips fondò una fabbrica di lampadine a Eindhoven con l'obiettivo di produrre lampadine a incandescenza a filamento di carbonio. I raccordi e le lampadine provengono da altre fabbriche, ma Philips ha prodotto il filo di carbonio interno. Lampade a filamento di carbonio sono state le prime lampadine a incandescenza, in cui un filamento emette luce quando riscaldata da una corrente elettrica. Il filamento deve essere tenuto in un vuoto per impedirlo di bruciare, e per questo il filamento è racchiuso in una lampadina di vetro.
