CAIRONegli inizi del XIX secolo, Cairo non era una città impressionante. Era piccolo e non più sul Nilo come il fiume aveva cambiato corso. E' stato stretto e sporco. Ma alla metà del XIX secolo la città era cambiata. È cresciuto e nuovi hotel sono stati costruiti per l'afflusso di turisti. Nel 1867 il Khedive, Ismail Pasha, era stato all'Esposizione Internazionale di Parigi ed era diventato impressionato da Haussmann
