Pinturas y esculturas del joven san Juan Bautista eran comunes en casas florentinas, donde los ciudadanos lo invocaban como patrono de Florencia y protector de su pueblo. En los ambientes domésticos, fue representado como santo y un niño florentino, una ambigüedad deliberada que lo habría hecho relatable a los jóvenes devotos en el hogar. Fittingly, el Juan Bautista de Piero es un joven compasivo y un guardián místico. Esta fue una de las primeras obras que pintó Piero, y su hábil ejecución de detalles naturalistas revela su interés en la pintura neotelandesa.
