Dipinti e sculture del giovane san Giovanni Battista erano comuni nelle case fiorentine, dove i cittadini lo invocavano come patrono di Firenze e protettore del suo popolo. Nelle ambientazioni domestiche, fu interpretato sia come un santo che come un ragazzo fiorentino, un'ambiguità deliberata che lo avrebbe reso relabile ai giovani devoti della famiglia. Abilmente, Giovanni Battista di Piero è sia un giovane simpatico che un tutore mistico. Questa è stata una delle prime opere che Piero ha dipinto, e la sua sapiente esecuzione di dettagli naturalistici rivela il suo interesse per la pittura olandese.
