La forma oblungo e la materia erudita di questi dipinti suggeriscono che originariamente funzionavano come pannelli in una stanza destinata allo studio e alla contemplazione. L'artista ha immaginato la prima storia dell'umanità che si svolge in un contesto paesaggistico. In una scena, gli esseri umani e le creature mitologiche approfittano di un fuoco forestale per cacciare gli animali. In secondo luogo, trasportano il loro bottino a terra. Piero trasse ispirazione dal poeta e filosofo romano Lucrezio (ca. 99–55 a.C.), il cui lavoro era stato riscoperto nel 1400. Lucrezio credeva che i lavori del mondo potessero essere rappresentati da cause naturali piuttosto che divine, e mise avanti una visione della storia umana che differiva sorprendentemente dai conti biblici.
