Il dipinto, appartenente alla tarda produzione di questo eccentrico artista, è una delle sue opere più note. Esso illustra il mito di Perseo che libera Andromeda dopo aver ucciso il mostro marino a cui la giovane donna stava per essere sacrificata. Ricco di dettagli, dai costumi esotici alla varietà degli strumenti musicali, questo pannello, commissionato dalla famiglia Strozzi, era già tra le opere esposte nella Tribuna degli Uffizi nel 1589.
