La pintura, perteneciente a la producción tardía de este artista excéntrico, es una de sus obras más conocidas. Ilustra el mito de Perseo que libera a Andrómeda después de matar al monstruo marino a quien la joven estaba a punto de ser sacrificada. Rico en detalle, desde los trajes exóticos hasta la variedad de instrumentos musicales, este panel, encargado por la familia Strozzi, ya estaba entre las obras expuestas en la Tribuna de los Uffizi en 1589.
