Se dice que Simonetta Vespucci fue una de las mujeres más bellas de Florencia a mediados del siglo XV. Era modelo para Botticelli. Aunque el retrato es un odo a la belleza, también es un tributo póstumo. Simonetta Vespucci murió prematuramente, de veintitrés años, de tuberculosis. En memoria de la joven, tras su muerte, Giuliano de Medici, hermano de Lorenzo Magnífico, encargó la pintura de Piero di Cosimo (1462-1521). El simbolismo que representa la serpiente evoca el ciclo eterno de vida y los árboles muertos de un lado, y los árboles vivos del otro, evoca el breve destino del modelo y el ciclo de vida.
