Un amoureux passionné de la nature qui le croyait, a entendu les voix des arbres, , Rousseau faisait partie de l'école Barbizon – un groupe d'artistes nommé pour un village à environ 30 miles de Paris où ils étaient basés. Ils ont souvent peint dans la forêt voisine de Fontainebleau; Rousseau a même aidé à faire préserver la région comme un parc. Les artistes Barbizon faisaient partie d'un mouvement plus vaste dans la littérature, la musique et les arts visuels appelé le mouvement romantique, dans lequel les artistes peignaient des vues émotionnelles et expressives du monde.
