Ein leidenschaftlicher Naturliebhaber, der glaubte, dass er „die Stimmen der Bäume gehörte“, war Rousseau Teil der Barbizon-Schule – eine Gruppe von Künstlern, die für ein Dorf benannt wurden, etwa 30 Meilen von Paris entfernt, wo sie ansässig waren. Sie malten oft im nahegelegenen Wald von Fontainebleau; Rousseau half sogar, die Gegend als Park zu erhalten. Die Barbizon-Künstler waren Teil einer größeren Bewegung in Literatur, Musik und bildenden Künsten, die die romantische Bewegung nannte – in der Künstler emotionale, ausdrucksvolle Ansichten der Welt bemalten.
