1911 kaufte Pierre Bonnard eine Immobilie namens La Roulotte, in Vernonnet, nur wenige Kilometer von Giverny entfernt. Er blieb oft dort bis 1936, als er dauerhaft nach Le Cannet zog, wo er 1926 ein Grundstück gekauft hatte. In der Normandie waren Claude Monet und Pierre Bonnard Freunde und teilten eine gegenseitige Bewunderung. Bonnard ging mehrmals nach Giverny, wie aus ihrer Korrespondenz und vielen Fotos zu sehen ist. Die Meinung seines jüngeren Freundes war für Monet wichtig, wie in einem Brief aus der Vergangenheit gezeigt, als er an seinen Grand Decorations arbeitete, eine Reihe von Wandmalereien zum Thema Wasserlöwen, für das Musée de l’Orangerie:
