Subleyras wurde gewählt, um Papst Benedikt XIV Staatsportrait zu malen, aber dieses direkte, informelle Bild nimmt uns viel näher an den Mann, der Antiquariat und Grand Tourist Horace Walpole beschrieben als “ein Priester ohne Unlöslichkeit oder Interesse, ein Prinz ohne Favoriten.” Seine schwarze Kieferlinie und fünf Uhr Schatten humanisieren den heiligen Sitter in Europa. Subleyras war perfekt geeignet, um die begrenzte Palette von päpstlichen Winterkleidung aus einem ermine-lined cape (mozzetta) und Hut (camauro) anzugehen. Der Stuhl ist mit den päpstlichen Schlüsseln und Familienrüstungen verziert.
