Subleyras fue elegida para pintar el retrato estatal del Papa Benedicto XIV, pero esta imagen directa e informal nos acerca mucho más al hombre que el anticuario y el Gran Turista Horace Walpole describió como “un sacerdote sin insolencia o interés, un príncipe sin favoritos”. Su mandíbula y su sombra de cinco en punto humanizan el más santo tamiz en Europa. Un colorista supremo, Subleyras era perfectamente adecuado para abordar la paleta limitada de garbo de invierno papal de una capa erminada (mozzetta) y sombrero (camauro). La robada está decorada con las llaves papales y los dispositivos armorials familiares.
