Belgisch geboren Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) erzielte Erfolg als offizieller Hofkünstler der Königin Marie Antoinette. 1798 wurde er berufen, die Blumen von Malmaison von Josephine Bonaparte zu malen. Redouté beherrschte die ungewöhnliche Technik der Stipple Gravur, die die subtilen Farbvariationen ermöglichte, für die seine Arbeit bekannt ist. Redouté trug während seines Lebens über 2100 veröffentlichte farbige Platten bei, die über 1800 Arten darstellen, viele nie zuvor illustriert.
