Il belga Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) ottenne il successo come artista ufficiale della corte della regina Maria Antonietta. Nel 1798 fu nominato per dipingere i fiori di Malmaison da Josephine Bonaparte. Redouté ha imparato l'insolita tecnica dell'incisione dello stipplo che ha reso possibile le sottili variazioni di colore per cui il suo lavoro è rinomato. Redouté ha contribuito oltre 2100 targhe colorate pubblicate durante la sua vita, raffiguranti oltre 1800 specie, molte mai illustrate prima.
