Il modello detiene una corda o uno staff in una posizione che potrebbe successivamente essere adattato a un contesto narrativo, forse un pescatore che trasporta una rete. La stessa posa è stata catturata in almeno due altri dipinti, uno dei quali è di Théodore Gericault. Poiché Gericault sviluppò le sue abilità nello studio di Pierre-Narcisse Guérin (1774–1833), tutti e tre i dipinti forniscono la prova della pratica didattica di Guérin. Lavorare dal modello live era un'attività di gruppo, come lo stesso Guérin sapeva studiare con il pittore di storia Jacques Louis David, l'insegnante più influente in Europa nei decenni intorno al 1800.
