Nudes und die große Tradition der klassischen Kunst präokkupied Renoir in den 1880er Jahren. In diesem Gemälde pflegte er die Hommage an Ingress Grande Odalisque (Musée du Louvre, Paris), obwohl er Ingres's coole Höflichkeit in ein gesundes, rosa-gebackenes Mädchen verwandelte, und die Harem in eine impressionistische Landschaft erinnert an die Kanalküste.
