Les nues et la grande tradition de l'art classique préoccupaient Renoir dans les années 1880. Dans ce tableau, il rend hommage à la Grande Odalisque d'Ingres (Musée du Louvre, Paris), tout en transformant la gentille courtisane d'Ingres en une jeune fille en bonne santé, au goût rose, et le harem en un paysage impressionniste rappelant la côte de la Manche.
