Renoir raffigura la figlia di cinque anni del suo devoto patrono Paul Berard, diplomatico e banchiere che incontrò nel 1878. L'artista spesso si estese presso la casa di campagna Berards a Wargemont, vicino a Dieppe, sulla costa della Normandia, dove dipinse immagini decorative per la casa e un vero e proprio album di ritratti di famiglia, che vanno dalle commissioni formali alle opere più intime che riflettono una genuina predilezione per i quattro bambini Berard. Secondo il nipote di Margot, Renoir dipinse questo ritratto spiritoso per "chierla su" dopo una lezione disaccordo con il suo tutor tedesco l'aveva portata a piangere.
