Renoir stellt die fünfjährige Tochter seines engagierten Patrons Paul Berard dar, einem Diplomaten und Banker, den er 1878 traf. Der Künstler gesommert oft im Landhaus Berards in Wargemont, in der Nähe von Dieppe, an der Normandie Küste, wo er dekorative Bilder für das Haus und ein veritables Familienalbum von Porträts gemalt hat, von formalen Kommissionen bis hin zu intimeren Arbeiten, die eine echte Vorliebe für die vier Berard-Kinder widerspiegeln. Nach Margots Neffe bemalte Renoir dieses geistes Portrait, um sie nach einer uneinnehmbaren Lektion mit ihrem deutschen Tutor zu Tränen zu bringen.
