Der Titel Renoir auf dieses Gemälde übertragen ist beispiellos. Bis 1885 war es auf dem Markt als La Servante, und seit vielen Jahren wurde das Thema irrtümlich als Kellnerin im beliebten Pariser Restaurant Duval’s identifiziert. Was auch immer ihre Rolle, Renoir vermittelte seinem Comely-Modell eine unbeeinflusste Gnade. Wie er einmal sagte: "Ich mag Malerei am besten, wenn es ewig aussieht, ohne darüber zu rühmen: eine alltägliche Ewigkeit, auf der Straßenecke offenbart: ein Diener-Mädchen pflegt einen Moment, wie sie eine Untertasse schaut und ein Juno am Olymp wird."
