Il titolo Renoir conferito a questo dipinto non è tratto. Nel 1885 era sul mercato come La Servante, e per molti anni dopo il soggetto fu identificato, erroneamente, come cameriera nel famoso ristorante parigino chiamato Duval. Qualunque sia il suo ruolo, Renoir ha impartito al suo modello comely una grazia non colpita. Come ha detto una volta, "Mi piace dipingere meglio quando sembra eterno senza vantarsi di esso: un'eternità quotidiana, rivelata nell'angolo di strada: una serva-ragazza pausing un momento come lei flagella un pentolino, e diventare un Juno su Olimpo."
