El título de Renoir conferido a esta pintura no es trazado. Para 1885 estaba en el mercado como La Servante, y durante muchos años después el tema fue identificado, erróneamente, como camarera en el popular restaurante parisino llamado Duval. Sea cual sea su papel, Renoir impartió a su modelo de comedia una gracia no afectada. Como dijo una vez, "Me gusta pintar mejor cuando se ve eterna sin jactarse de ello: una eternidad cotidiana, revelada en la esquina de la calle: una sirvienta-chica pasando un momento mientras ella pica una cacerola, y convirtiéndose en Juno en Olympus."
