Ispirato dalla Rivoluzione francese, persone di colore sull'isola di Hispaniola (oggi Haiti e la Repubblica Dominicana) si ribellarono con successo contro i loro colonizzatori francesi e spagnoli; Haiti divenne una repubblica indipendente nel 1804. Boyer era un soldato, uno dei leader della rivoluzione haitiana, e presidente di Haiti dal 1818 al 1843.
