Un fisico e matematico francese, André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) nacque a Lione e divenne professore al Politecnico di École nel 1805 e successivamente all'Université e al Collège de France. L'inventore dell'ago astatico che ha dato origine all'invenzione del galvanometro astatico, ha formulato la base matematica di elettrodinamica e sviluppato Ampère
