Jean-Baptiste Kléber (1753-1800), general francés, recibió su educación militar en Munich. Renunciando su comisión en el ejército austriaco, regresó a Francia y estudió fortificación y ciencia militar. La distinción ganadora en la guerra de Vendéan, Kléber se hizo división general. Bajo Bonaparte, ordenó su división en Siria, tomando El-Arish, Gaza, Jaffa y el Monte Tabor en 1799. Kléber, con sólo diez mil hombres, derrotó al ejército turco de sesenta mil en Heliopolis y fue a tomar El Cairo, donde fue asesinado en 1800.
