François-August-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) è stato uno statista e autore francese. Nel 1803 Napoleaon lo nominò segretario della Legazione a Roma, ma in un opuscolo scritto nel 1814, diede il suo sostegno alla monarchia. Chateaubriand fu creato pari di Francia nell'anno successivo e servì come ambasciatore a Berlino, Londra e Roma, e come ministro degli affari esteri nel 1823. È considerato uno dei principali scrittori del movimento romantico.
