François-August-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) war ein französischer Staatsmann und Autor. Im Jahre 1803 ernannte Napoleaon ihn Sekretär der Legation in Rom, aber in einer 1814 geschriebenen Broschüre gab er seine Unterstützung der Monarchie. Chateaubriand wurde im darauffolgenden Jahr als Pfarrer Frankreichs gegründet und diente 1823 als Botschafter in Berlin, London und Rom und als Außenminister. Er gilt als einer der führenden Schriftsteller der romantischen Bewegung.
