Jean-Antoine-Dominique Ingres, pittore francese, nacque a Montauban nel 1780 e andò a Parigi per studiare nello studio di David. Vinse il prix de Rome nel 1802. Tornato a Parigi nel 1820, fu nominato professore all'Académie e nel 1834 fu nominato direttore dell'Accademia francese di Roma. Istituì una reputazione invidiabile e fu nominato membro della Legion d'onore e senatore nel 1862. Morì a Parigi nel 1867.
