L'immagine mostra due scimmie incatenate ad un anello di ferro e seduti in un'apertura finestra a volta. I due animali sono ovviamente giunti a patti con il loro triste destino. Si sta croccando sul pavimento, con la schiena piegata e abbracciata su se stesso, fissando nello spazio, mentre l'altro sta guardando lo spettatore. Dietro di loro è una vista di un paesaggio aperto, inondato di luce diurna luminosa, e visto senza transizione, come se da un alto look-out post. La città di Anversa balza sotto un cielo azzurro. Le scimmie Bruegel ha dipinto sono del genere ceropithecidae, mangabey colletto, che abitano la costa occidentale dell'Africa. Tuttavia, l'immagine di Bruegel non è uno studio animale, ma un'allegoria di cattività e la speranza di una vita libera che è inerente a tutte le creature.
