Come il suo contemporaneo Johannes Vermeer, Pieter de Hooch ha svolto un ruolo pionieristico nel progresso della pittura di genere in Olanda del XVII secolo. È stato particolarmente dotato come pittore di interni -complessi arrangiamenti spaziali splendidamente bello nella manipolazione della luce. L'immagine Lehman è riccamente decorata con un pavimento in marmo e rivestimenti a parete gilt-leather, articolati da luce diffusa dalla finestra a sinistra. Il triste dialogo nel vicino terreno è afflitto dal misterioso incontro di un giovane e anziano portato figura nell'anticamera e vestibolo. De Hooch raggiunge una straordinaria chiarezza e geometria in questa camera grandemente arredata, qualità evocative dei dipinti realizzati ad Amsterdam negli anni 1660.
