Gli spettatori del tempo avrebbero preso a colpo d'occhio non solo i carrubanti fuori-chiave ma anche i segni—le scarpe di fantasia, i capelli crespi, il colletto aperto, e così via—che rendono il satiro simbolico ridondante. Quast ha lavorato nel milieus cosmopolita di Amsterdam e L'Aia. I suoi dipinti e disegni finiti rivelano una vasta conoscenza delle immagini popolari olandesi, fiamminghe e francesi (tra cui le incisioni di Callot) così come la scena comica.
