Aquí, Saenredam ha pintado una representación precisa del Mariakerk medieval en Utrecht. Ya estaba en ruinas en el siglo XVII y fue posteriormente demolido. Saenredam tenía una preferencia por esos edificios antiguos, que documentó en dibujos con gran precisión. Al borde del toldo, se puede leer que completó esta pintura el 20 de noviembre de 1659. Sin embargo, lo basó en un dibujo que había hecho en el sitio 23 años antes, en el verano.
