Questo disegno fornisce un buon esempio del metodo di lavoro di Lely come uno dei ritrattisti di maggior successo in Inghilterra nella seconda metà del XVII secolo. A seguito dell'esempio di Anthony van Dyck, Lely dipinse solo la testa della sitter nella sua presenza, a volte posando in un contorno per la posa e il costume. Ha poi impiegato assistenti per completare il drappeggio e lo sfondo. Per alcuni sitter ben noti, Lely manterrebbe il suo originale studio di testa per aiutare nella produzione di repliche. Poiché Lely ha assimilato le sue sitter femminili a un ideale contemporaneo di bellezza, può spesso essere difficile identificarle oggi, come è il caso di questa donna sconosciuta.
