Nel panorama complessivo del XVII secolo veneziano la figura di Muttoni è sia insolita che tipica. Copiatore e falsificatore di grandi maestri del XVI secolo, soprattutto Giorgione e Tiziano, era molto richiesto dai collezionisti privati. Eppure non era insensibile alla pittura realistica del suo tempo, come si può vedere in questo tema picaresco.
