La caduta dei giganti fu un grande tentativo di Longhi nella pittura storica. Sotto la tutela di Antonio Balestra, il grande pittore storico, Longhi completò il dipinto sul soffitto del Palazzo Sagredo, ma fallì sia artisticamente che criticamente. Il terribile fallimento di Longhi al suo primo grande tentativo di pittura storica è probabilmente il motivo per cui si è trasformato da pittura grandi temi storici a scene più piccole e tranquille della vita sociale. Il suo mentore successivo fu Giuseppe Maria Crespi, che dipinse studi di vita contemporanea, e fu quindi uno dei motivi per cui Longhi fu in grado di avere successo come artista popolare.
