Secondo la prima biografa di Testa, l’artista ha cercato di studiare la luce e l’atmosfera della notte in piedi lungo il fiume Tevere di Roma “disegnando e osservando alcune riflessioni dell’arcobaleno nell’acqua”. I risultati sono stati paesaggi malinconici che prefigurano l'opera dei pittori del paesaggio romantico del XIX secolo. Era in una situazione di osservazione diretta di notte che Testa evidentemente annegava, presumibilmente per suicidio, nel 1650. Questa rappresentazione drammatica di Alessandro Magno sofferente da un improvviso freddo mentre il bagno nel fiume Cydnus è considerato uno dei suoi dipinti finali, e riecheggia ericamente la sua biografia.
