Commissionare un ritratto di Batoni era praticamente un rito di passaggio per i Grand Tourists a Roma. L’identità di questo giovane rimane sconosciuta, ma scelse il formato più lussuoso: un ritratto a tutta lunghezza con i props Batoni usato ripetutamente per annunciare un’educazione al Grand Tour, tra cui una statua di Minerva (la dea romana della saggezza), uno strumento astronomico noto come sfera militare, e libri: guide all’antica e moderna Roma, biografie dei pittori e Odyssey di Omero. Sulla tavola è una grande scultura di rilievo di Antinoo, amante dell'imperatore Adriano, che attesta la pronta integrazione della cultura omosessuale antica nelle celebrazioni mainstream di una-tiquità che ha caratterizzato il Grand Tour.
