Lunghezza tre quarti. Sitter rivolto con braccio sinistro appoggiato contro piedistallo in pelliccia di velluto rivestita (lynx fur) accappatoio. John Rolle Walter servì come deputato per Exeter (1754-76) e Devon (1776-79). Era il secondo figlio di John Rolle di Stevenstone e Isabella Charlotte (nata Walter), prese il nome di Walter in eredità alle proprietà della madre nell'Oxfordshire. Viaggiò in Italia durante il Grand Tour nel 1752-53 e fu dipinto da Pompeo Batoni a Roma. Batoni ha vinto fama internazionale soprattutto per la sua capacità di ritrarre la nobiltà britannica, spesso mostrata contro i famosi paesaggi italiani. Grand Grand I tour ritratti di Batoni hanno trovato case in collezioni private e hanno contribuito a garantire la popolarità del genere in Gran Bretagna. Dall’acquisizione del ritratto di John Rolle Walter da parte di RAMM, è stato individuato uno studio preliminare presso lo Statens Museum di Copenhagen (The National Gallery of Denmark). Acquistato con l'aiuto del Heritage Lottery Fund, Art Fund, MLA/V&A Buy Grant Fund, Devon County Council, gli Amici della RAMM, i Reynolds Chard Bequest e i donatori privati, 2008
