Grande pannello centrale di una pala d'altare realizzata, dal più qualificato laboratorio di pittura di Anversa, per l'allora nuova chiesa fondata del Monastero di Madre de Deus inLisbon (1509). Gli altri sette dipinti più piccoli che circondano il quadro centrale rappresentano episodi tragici della vita e della passione di Cristo testimoniati da Maria, così chiamati Suoi “sette dolori”. La figura monumentale della Vergine in blu concentrerebbe l'occhio del credente sulla pala d'altare.
