Raffaele Carloforti incontrò per la prima volta Ruskin ad Assisi nel 1874. Due anni dopo, Ruskin lo definì “giovane che sto mantenendo nello studio d’arte a Venezia”, e gli commissionò copie di dipinti e sculture. Come tutti questi lavori sopravvissuti, questo disegno reca una fedele iscrizione
