Questo è uno dei migliori dipinti devozionali di Raffaellino. La linea nervosa, l'architettura classica eccentrica e la tavolozza fresca si ispirano direttamente all'opera di Filippino Lippi, sotto la quale Raffaellino si forma. Questa composizione può essere basata su un disegno di Lippi, e la dimensione intima del quadro suggerisce che era destinato a un interno domestico. Il motivo della Vergine che offre il Cristo Bambino il suo seno – i lattani di Vergine – è stato popolare in tali spazi perché sottolinea la natura umana delle due figure sante. Le perdite in toni di carne sul volto della Vergine hanno rivelato il verde che si dipinge sotto.
